Three and a half centuries in one grain of sheesham.
Saharanpur, in western Uttar Pradesh, is India's woodcarving capital — a cluster of thousands of workshops whose carved woodwork carries a Geographical Indication of its own. What follows is where it came from, how it is made, and what it is made of.
(01) The Timeline
From Kabul road to karkhana.
15th Century
Afghan and Central Asian roots
The lattice-and-inlay vocabulary that Saharanpur later made its own travelled into North India with Afghan and Central Asian craftsmen along the Kabul–Delhi trade route. The pierced screen (jaali), the geometric star and the arabesque vine belong to this Islamic architectural grammar, first executed in stone and later transposed to wood.
1857
The Multan migration
The revolt of 1857 and the disruption that followed pushed families of woodworkers eastward from Multan and the western Punjab into the Doab. Saharanpur — sitting on the Yamuna–Ganga plain with abundant sheesham and a Mughal-era timber trade — absorbed them. Their inlay skills fused with local carving to form the distinctive Saharanpur idiom.
1882
The first organised workshop
Through the 1880s the craft moved from household work to organised karkhanas clustered around Khatakheri, Lakdi Bazaar and Chaudhary Bazaar. Colonial district gazetteers of the period record Saharanpur carved woodwork as a recognised industry with a master–apprentice (ustad–shagird) structure that still governs the trade today.
1902–1903
Delhi Durbar and the exhibition age
Saharanpur carving was shown at the great colonial exhibitions — the Delhi Durbar exhibition of 1902–03 among them — alongside earlier appearances in London and Calcutta. Imperial patronage created a European appetite for carved screens, brackets and tables, and set the ornate 'exhibition piece' style that buyers still associate with the city.
1990s
The export boom
Liberalisation opened direct export channels. Saharanpur became India's largest wood-handicraft export cluster, shipping carved furniture and giftware to Europe, West Asia and North America, and supporting tens of thousands of artisan households across the district.
2010s
Digital disruption and decline
Machine-made and imported substitutes, thinning sheesham supply, rising timber costs and a shift of buyers to online marketplaces squeezed margins. Middlemen captured the digital shelf; carvers did not. Younger artisans left for construction and factory work, and the master–apprentice chain began to break.
2026
Renaissance
A new generation is re-purposing the craft rather than reviving its ornament: offcuts and scrap from the same karkhanas become sensory tools, mobility aids and learning objects. Arunarya works inside this shift — paying carvers for skill, not volume, and giving the wood a second, useful life.
(02) Six Techniques
What the hand knows.
Tarkashi तारकशी

Fine brass or copper wire hammered into hair-thin channels chiselled into seasoned sheesham, then filed and polished flush so the metal reads as a drawn line. Saharanpur's signature technique and its most demanding — a single tray can hold several hundred separate wire insertions.
Jaali जाली

Pierced lattice screens cut with fret and chisel, descended from the stone jaalis of Mughal architecture. Geometric repeats of six-, eight- and twelve-point stars filter light and air; in sensory work the same perforations become a texture map for exploring fingers.
Vine Leaf बेल-पत्ती

Deep relief carving of a continuous scrolling vine with naturalistic leaves, the most recognisable Saharanpur surface. Carved freehand from a chalked outline, it demands control of undercut and shadow rather than pattern-copying.
Anguri अंगूरी

The grape motif — clustered spherical fruit set among curling tendrils, worked in high relief. Traditionally reserved for panel centres and box lids; its rounded, repeating bumps make it one of the richest tactile surfaces the craft produces.
Marquetry नक्काशी-जड़ाई

Inlay of contrasting materials — pale dudhi, dark sheesham, bone substitute and acrylic — cut to shape and set into a routed bed to build geometric fields and star medallions. Colour is achieved by wood choice, not stain.
Lathe Turning खराद

Bowls, spindles, beads, handles and stacking rings shaped on hand and treadle-descended lathes. The turner's craft supplies the round, seamless forms — the safest and most satisfying shapes for small hands and unsteady grips.
(03) Four Woods
The material, honestly named.
Sheesham
Dalbergia sissoo · Indian rosewood
The backbone of the craft. A dense, interlocked-grain hardwood with deep golden-brown to chocolate heartwood, it holds a crisp chisel edge without crumbling — which is why fine relief and tarkashi channels are cut in it. Naturally durable and termite-resistant; a nitrogen-fixing tree grown widely on Doab farm bunds.
Teak
Tectona grandis · sagwan
Warm honey-brown, straight-grained and rich in natural oils that repel water and insects. Exceptionally stable across humidity swings, so it is chosen for structural frames, load-bearing aids and anything that must not warp. Sourced from plantation stock.
Dudhi
Wrightia tinctoria · ivory wood
A close, even-grained cream-white timber almost free of visible figure — locally called the 'milk wood'. Soft enough for delicate lathe work and lacquer turning, and pale enough to act as the light element in marquetry against dark sheesham.
Mango
Mangifera indica · aam
Golden-brown with lively streaks of pink and grey, harvested from orchard trees that have passed fruit-bearing age — making it the most genuinely renewable timber in the cluster. Moderately hard, excellent for turning, and forgiving to carve.
